גרייט פולס (באנגלית: Great Falls) היא עיר במדינת מונטנה שבארצות הברית. גרייט פולס היא עיר הבירה של מחוז קסקייד.[1] לפי מפקד האוכלוסין של שנת 2017, יש לגרייט פולס 58,638 תושבים.[2]

גרייט פולס נקראת על חמשת מפלי המים של נהר מיזורי שליד העיר.

היסטוריה

בני האדם הראשונים שגרו באזור גרייט פולס היו פלאו-אינדיאנים אשר נדדו לאזור בערך 9,500 ו–8,270 שנים לפני הספירה.[3] בערך בשנת 1600, אינדיאנים של שבט ”פֵייגַן בלַקפוּט” נכנסו לאזור וכבשו אותו. השבט הזה גר בסביבות גרייט פולס גם אחרי שארצות הברית קנתה את לואיזיאנה.[4][5]

גרייט פולס הוקמה בשנת 1883. איש העסקים פריס גיבסון ביקר את מפלי המים של נהר מיזורי בשנת 1880 והתרשם מהאפשרות לבנות עיר תעשייתית עם אנרגיה הידרואלקטרית.[6][7][8] בשנת 1883, גיבסון חזר עם חלוצים נוספים כדי להקים עיר. בשנה הבאה, נבנו בתים וחנויות, וטחנת קמח נוסדה.[9] סניף הדואר הראשון פתח את שעריו באותה השנה.[10]

גאוגרפיה

גרייט פולס ממוקמת קרוב למפלי המים של נהר מיזורי. היא שוכנת במרכז מדינת מונטנה, בצפון המישורים הגדולים ובקרבת רכס הרי הרוקי. גרייט פולס היא נמצאת 100 ק"מ מדרום לגבול בין קנדה לארצות הברית.

בגרייט פולס נמצאים בסיס טיסה מַלמסְטרוֹם. בבסיס הזה חיל האוויר מפקח על טילים בליסטיים בין–יבשתיים.
